“He opens his eyes and stares directly into the morning sun which wallows up from the misty sea like some bloated, dying fish. The sky is gray and immobile, a dome of lead. A cloud hangs mute and dark over the western horizon. High up, barely visible, a seagull floats on motionless wings. Its cry is weird and restless.”
– Ingmar Bergman, The Seventh Seal
“I had forgotten that time wasn’t fixed like concrete but in fact was fluid as sand, or water. I had forgotten that even misery can end. ”
– Joyce Carol Oates, I Am No One You Know
“Soon it got dusk, a grapy dusk, a purple dusk over tangerine groves and long melon fields; the sun the color of pressed grapes, slashed with burgundy red, the fields the color of love and Spanish mysteries.”
– Jack Kerouac, On the Road
OMG! pressed grapes…..burgundy….. I am flying somewhere else. Thank you for the words here and all that sensational colour and the rainbow moisture in your photos. So much more there still to see too! Might ye be referring to Ormond by the Sea?
Har har I’m actually moving up near Ormond by the Sea, soon. Gorgeous area. These shots are a little more south. Cocoa Beach area, around the Kennedy Space Center.
Lucky!!! Have a wonderful Christmas!
You too! Happy Christmas!
everything about this post works . . . perfectly
Thanks so much dear Liana!! Your words are deeply appreciated! Thank you for cursitating by and having a wee look about. Joyous cheers to you,

Brilliant pics and well chosen quotes. I was about 16 when I saw ‘The Seventh Seal’, and was probably too young to comprehend it. Perhaps I should have another look
Aloha! Thank you so much. Yes! Lovely film. I first saw it back in 2007. I was in deep grief and decided that was the perfect time to begin watching Mr. Bergman. 😉 I was amazed to find out, recently, that most of the “Seventh Seal” was shot on set. One certainly cannot tell…So many quotable lines spring to mind from that film. I adore Ingmar Bergman’s “Wild Strawberries,” as well. Very beautiful and pensive, potently emotional film…
Hope you enjoy your return to “The Seventh Seal.” Thanks so much for visiting and leaving behind such kind words. Warmest regards,
Smiling Toad
Moving, Deep stuff, well portrayed. Love it.
Thanks so much! Your words are greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Great quote / photo pairing!💝
Thank you!! Always such fun putting these kinds of posts together. I love to collect quotes 😉
Wonderful photos (especially the one of the shell on the sand) and amazing words to go with them. Visiting your blog is a real treat!
Thank you very much! I love the desolate little shell shot, as well. I love that feeling of dejection, solitude and desiderium…I am so glad you enjoyed your visit! Thank you for the very kind words, indeed, and for drizzling by! Smiling cheers,
Autumn Jade

Love the photos accompanied by quotes or is it the other way around?
My but if that last quote doesn’t make me want to read it over and over again.
Thanks so much!! I have a special kind of love for the book “On the Road.” Jack Kerouac’s voice reminds me so much of my brother. Thanks for drizzling by and leaving such a marvelous comment! Jubilant cheers,
Smiling Toad
You’ve excelled yourself again AJ. May I wish you and Sir a wonderful Christmas my friend. xox ❤
Thank you mate. Happy Christmas to you, dear Ralph!! Bug hugs- smiling toad
I’m always impressed with how naturally you seem to handle black. Most of your images have a very effortless sort of signature, which makes them easy to look at and gives a soothing quality.
Thank you so much. I feel very inept and rather incompetent when working with photography, so I thank you for your kind and thoughtful comment. I am usually in a solemn and desolate state of mind when I am shooting, and that drives me toward black-and-white, creating these simple and sad little images. I’ve always loved and have been moved the most by black-and-white. Thanks so much for visiting. Best wishes,
Autumn Jade
I’m listening to Sam Smiths “stay with me” while scrolling through these beauties and wow. Such great composition.
Beautiful and poignant song! Love it! So delighted you enjoyed your visit. Thank you for sluicing by!

I’m a big Ingmar Bergman fan.
I must watch The Seventh Seal again soon.
I am a massive Bergman fan, as well. I hope you got a chance to watch “The Seventh Seal” again. I just adore that film. Regards,
Autumn Jade
That one is so good.
It really is…
Another wonderful series of images-your use of quotes appears quite intuitive-each one captures an essence of the image and vice versa-great stuff!
Thanks so much Little Dogs Meg,
I am so elated that you enjoyed this post. I would say most of my posts are led staggering about by a blundering intuition. I am delighted that you feel it came together well, here. I was in a very “bergman” state of mind when I took these.
All the best, and thank you for gambolling by,
Autumn Jade
