“I have always shook with fright before human beings.”
― Osamu Dazai, No Longer Human

“Nothing like poetry when you lie awake at night. It keeps the old brain limber. It washes away the mud and sand that keeps on blocking up the bends. Like waves to make the pebbles dance on my old floors. And turn them into rubies and jacinths; or at any rate, good imitations.”
― Joyce Cary, The Horse’s Mouth

“The . . . sun was shining in at the smoky small-paned windows; sometimes an outside shutter swung to with a creak, and eclipsed the glare. The narrow door stood wide open . . . and an old spotted dog lay asleep on the step, and looked wise and old enough to have gone to school with several generations of children.”
― Sarah Orne Jewett, A Native of Winby

“It is a strange thing to come home. While yet on the journey, you cannot at all realize how strange it will be.”
― Selma Lagerlöf

“You know, David, if I could send a message to mankind, I would send them a New Year’s greeting. I would like them to dwell on a single New Year’s prayer: ‘Lord, please let my soul come to maturity before it is reaped.'”
― The Phantom Carriage (1921), directed by Victor Sjöström; based on Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness! by Selma Lagerlöf

Music– Edit’s Chamber – Matti Bye

Prelude to the Monody“He opens his eyes and stares directly into the morning sun which wallows up from the misty sea like some bloated, dying fish. The sky is gray and immobile, a dome of lead. A cloud hangs mute and dark over the western horizon. High up, barely visible, a seagull floats on motionless wings. Its cry is weird and restless.”
– Ingmar Bergman, The Seventh Seal

Chewing Sand“I had forgotten that time wasn’t fixed like concrete but in fact was fluid as sand, or water. I had forgotten that even misery can end. ”
– Joyce Carol Oates, I Am No One You Know

Liquid Binding“Soon it got dusk, a grapy dusk, a purple dusk over tangerine groves and long melon fields; the sun the color of pressed grapes, slashed with burgundy red, the fields the color of love and Spanish mysteries.”
– Jack Kerouac, On the Road

And No Birds Sing:  Rachel Carson and Silent Spring- A BBC Podcast on Rachel Carson
Fractured00
“The edge of the sea is a strange and beautiful place.”
― Rachel Carson

DrillingTowardTheSky00

“In every out-thrust headland, in every curving beach, in every grain of sand there is the story of the earth.”
― Rachel Carson

Edge04“The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.”
― Rachel Carson

SeaTrees01“It is a curious situation that the sea, from which life first arose should now be threatened by the activities of one form of that life. But the sea, though changed in a sinister way, will continue to exist; the threat is rather to life itself.”
― Rachel Carson, The Sea Around Us

TheEndlessSand01“If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in.”
― Rachel Carson

Blue Ribbed Sand“In nature nothing exists alone.”
― Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

Despair04“But man is a part of nature, and his war against nature is inevitably a war against himself.”
― Rachel Carson

WithintheBlearyBracketsofTime01“Those who dwell, as scientists or laymen, among the beauties and mysteries of the earth, are never alone or weary of life.”
― Rachel Carson

On the Way to the Beach

Squinting sour

Shards of shell

In cherry light-

Sober morning

GoodMorningMaties

Tumbling like

Wintry waves

Of coy jade-

Disfigured thoughts

Energy“The sea always filled her with longing, though for what she was never sure.”

―Cornelia Funke, Inkheart

Jubilant WavesCacophonous wind carries seagull drawls,
the bell buoy’s alarm and bleating boats.
Sweet breaths take in morning laughter,
fingers skimming the chiming waters;

the harmony of the sea
tickling the Surfer’s soul,
saline breeze against His back,
breaking waves beneath His toes.

Saline RuminationCrying plaudit, the art of elation,
wax and salt, and squinting eyes,
greet the sun of auriferous creation.

Glitters what is born of Pastel Dawn.

Rogue in the WavesA sky of free-thought and clarity,
testing the nerves, tempting Humanity-

recall no concept of finality,
spill like a wingless cherub
smiling inside the curling blue.

DecemberSurfPoised, there, in the Glass Barrel
is the conception of Stillness–
where the rains never penetrate.

Surfer, encompass the ride eternally-
the ocean pulses through Your veins.

Slowly masticates the land, this little, rippled trickle of Sea; so similar to the furtive Ambition that patiently gnaws away at me.
